Practical Examination FAQ’s
- Successfully pass a hands-on practical examination performed on a typodont.
- Successfully pass a State computerized written examination.
- Successfully pass a State computerized law and ethics written examination.
- Successfully complete Board-approved courses in coronal polishing and radiation safety.
- Successfully complete and show proof of a Board-approved course in Dental Practice Act, an eight hour Board-approved course in infection control, and proof of basic life support (CPR) card.
- Submit fingerprint clearances from both the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Identification. This process can take 60 days or more. If an applicant has a criminal history, arrest report and court records must be obtained and investigated before a decision is made to issue or deny the license.
- Graduated from a Board-approved RDA educational program of a minimum of 800 hours (approximately 8 months); or
- Completed at least 15 months of satisfactory (1,280 Hours) paid work experience as a dental assistant with a dentist licensed in one of the states in the United States; or
- Completed a California Department of Education approved 4-month educational program, and 11 months of work experience with a dentist(s) licensed in one of the states of the United States.
- You must include $80 with your initial application. This includes the application fee and the fee to take the practical exam.
- It is $43 to take the RDA clinical written exam.
- It is $23 for the Law & Ethics examination.
- It is $125 to rent a kit for the practical exam.
- It is approximately $71 for fingerprinting depending on where you go.
- Our preparation class for the practical exam is $260, but you get a $60 discount if you register and pay for the prep class and the kit rental at the same time. (There has to be good news somewhere in all of these fees right. )
- Fabrication of a temporary acrylic crown
- Cementation of the temporary acrylic crown
- Completion of a temporary sedative dressing

You rent a kit from us! We provide all of the supplies and materials you need to take the RDA practical exam. We take the kits to the exam site (San Francisco only – we do not go to Southern California) where we help you go thru everything and ensure that you have what you need to take and pass the exam.
There are two separate applications. One is for those who qualify by work experience and one is for those who qualify by education. You can find them both at:
Yes. You must file this application with all of the required documentation during the filing period. Then the Board will notify you if you qualify and when you will be taking the practical exam. They will also notify you regarding who to contact to take the written exams.

At this time, each section is available separately. We are currently in the process of completing each section, and as they are finished they will be available for purchase. When all sections are complete, the entire RDA Written Exam Preparation Program will be available at a significantly reduced package price.
Each section includes a video podcast, a corresponding worksheet, and a quiz. In many of the topics, additional resources are available as supplementary information and are available on the resources page.
You will have access to each individually purchased section for 30 days from the date of purchase. Once the entire program is available to purchase together, you will have 90 days to complete the program. After the 30/90 day window, you will no longer have access to that program.
Yes, you can watch each podcast and take each quiz multiple times within the 30 day window.
No, unfortunately there are no extensions available. Be sure to purchase the program (or sections you are interested in), during a 30 day period when you know you will have time to spend working the program.

The content in this Written Review Program is taken directly from the RDA Content Outline and the RDA Exam Plan provided by the Dental Board of California. These documents are available on the Dental Board’s website at http://www.dbc.ca.gov/applicants/rda/exam_rda.shtml. They are also available on our website. The six sections in our Review Program correspond with the RDA Content Outline (and the Exam Plan).
